Safeguarding general champion Harrie Smolders booked his spot at the inaugural Longines Super Grand Prix toward the finish of the season by taking the title in Hamburg. 

The Dutchman and his stallion Don VHP Z outpaced rising German star Maurice Tebbel on Chacco Boy and Swiss star Martin Fuchs with Chaplin to win the most recent leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour. 

"[Don VHP Z] is extremely reliable on this level," said Smolders. "When I strolled the course for the first round it looked intense so that was in our leeway right now. Also, I know he adores this place - he was second the most recent two years - and with seven in the hop off I had a decent shot and with this bounce off it suited him. 

"I could make the correct points and his extension had the effect today. For beyond any doubt it's constantly conceivable to go quicker, similar to Martin appeared, and with Maurice toward the end I knew there were quick blends who are youthful hungry still to come so I was certainly not certain, but rather I thought a platform put was conceivable."

His win in Hamburg implies Smolders, who ruled the 2017 LGCT season, fit the bill for the inaugural Longines Super Grand Prix in Prague toward the finish of the season. 

"I'm extremely satisfied that I am qualified," he said. "My steeds are presumably not the genuine victors, but rather they are extremely reliable and today was one of only a handful couple of chances for me to win one [of the qualifiers] and I had that inclination and the situation went like I needed. 

"I am exceptionally satisfied with that. I just completed two Globals up until now, however we will without a doubt be there at St Tropez and Cannes and ideally we can scale the leaderboard." 

The following leg of the LGCT happens in St. Tropez, France from May 31 through June 2. 

After five legs of the 16-leg rivalry, Britain's Scott Brash stays in the number one spot in the general standings with 131 focuses after Edwina Tops-Alexander fizzled the meet all requirements for the bounce off. The Australian is lying in second place with 119 focuses, trailed by Ben Maher, additionally from Britain, with 103 focuses. 

Both Brash and Tops-Alexander are attempting to wind up the main rider to win the general LGCT title three times.


Worldwide Champions League:

Prior in the day, Belgium's Pieter Devos and Under-25 rider Laura Klaphake of Germany helped St Tropez Pirates secure their first win of the 2018 season as they triumphed in the Longines Global Champions League. 

With the best four groups isolated by only four punishments, or one fence, of each other, the group was given an exciting finale to the two-day group occasion. 

In an intense course set by Frank Rothenberger, just 17 of the 56 starters bounced clear in the second round. 

"That is the thing that this is tied in with, putting the weight to the end," said Devos, who created two clear adjusts with two unique steeds more than two days. "It was a super rivalry, it was extremely imperative to be clear. Laura completed a super round, however had one down so I knew I needed to go clear. It makes additional weight, yet makes everything all the more energizing. That is what is about it was super game today." 

Holland's Jur Vrieling and Germany's Marcus Ehning pushed Valkenswaard United up two spots to complete second with only four punishments in the second round. The Shanghai Swans, with riders Pius Schwizer of Switzerland and Shane Sweetnam of Ireland, completed in third place. 

"It is a better than average group and a joy for me to be a piece of this group," said Tebbel of Valkenswaard United. "Today was somewhat unfortunate for us, however second place is decent."


It was an extreme second round for Berlin Eagles, who had been in the number one spot after the first round yet disintegrated under the weight with previous Olympic champion Ludger Beerbaum of Germany making 12 blames on Chiara while partner Philipp Weishaupt delivered eight punishments. 

London Knights remain the general pioneers of the Global Champions League, enhancing their sixteenth place after the first round to fifth after a key overnight difference in stallion and rider. Valkenswaard United are second while their Hamburg triumph pushed St Tropez Pirates into third place. 

The best 16 positioned groups this season will meet all requirements for the inaugural Global Champions Play Offs in Prague in December, which has a record prize pot of $10m, including $3m for the triumphant group.
